Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine services at the University of Maine at Augusta are provided by MaineGeneral's Sports Medicine.

A certified athletic trainer is available for all home varsity sporting events at UMA and a member of MaineGeneral's sports medicine team is on campus at the UMA Fitness Center twice a week from August through May. While the athletic trainer is available to the entire UMA campus, preference is given to in-season varsity student-athletes.

Student-athletes may also schedule an appointment to meet with a member of the MaineGeneral sports medicine staff at any time during the year.

Requirements for student-athletes to participate in varsity athletics:

1. Proof of health insurance.
2. A completed medical history form.
3. A completed medical clearance form.
4. A sports physical within six months of the starting date for your sport. See below for details.

Physicals

All student-athletes are required to receive a physical to participate in athletics. Student-athletes must have a physician complete and sign all three forms below and submit in to the UMA athletic department.

All three forms must be read, completed, and turned in to the University of Maine at Augusta athletic department prior to beginning any varsity sport, including pre-season practices. Any student-athlete who does not have the required paperwork completed will be held out of participation until it is received by the UMA athletic department.

Insurance

The university carries a secondary health care and accident insurance policy for its student-athletes. The university policy is considered the secondary payer to all other valid and collectible medical plans. This complimentary coverage plan covers athletic injuries only during the sport season, as specified by the Yankee Small College Conference and the University of Maine at Augusta. If your personal insurance excludes coverage for accident or injury resulting from participation in intercollegiate varsity sports, please understand that you may be subject to a $1,000 deductible prior to coverage by the university policy.

All campuses in the University of Maine System (UMS) require proof of health insurance as a condition of enrollment for students who fall into specific categories (defined below).  This policy is intended to support students’ progress toward their academic goals by providing access to a reasonably priced insruance.

Please read the UMA Student Health Insurance Plan for more information.
