Alex LaFountain commits to UMA men’s basketball

Alex LaFountain commits to UMA men’s basketball

AUGUSTA, Maine - The members of the men's and women's basketball teams at the University of Maine at Augusta think of one another as family, but for the newest men's basketball recruit, the term applies literally.

Alex LaFountain, brother of freshman standout Caitlin LaFountain, has committed to UMA for the fall of 2016 and will join the men's basketball team. LaFountain, a graduate of Mt. Ararat High School, brings a strong presence underneath the hoop. Head coach Jim Ford hopes that the 6'5 forward will help fill the tremendous void left by graduating senior Brandon Rogers who has led the nation in rebounding for the past two seasons.

LaFountain was a two-sport athlete in high school, excelling in both football and basketball. He served as a captain of the basketball team in his senior year and was named Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference First Team in the same season.

"The Moose are fortunate to have Alex coming to make a huge presence in the front court next season,"Ford said. "Alex's strength and athleticism at 6'5 in the paint will compliment senior Caleb McGuire's 6'7 ability to play inside or outside."

LaFountain plans to major in English and has an interest in journalism as well. The number of majors available at UMA played a significant role in his decision to attend UMA, as well as the opportunity to continue his basketball career. And, he confesses, his sister also played a role.

UMA already has a brother and sister duo for men's and women's basketball with Nick Bragg and Carmen Bragg, and last week the women's basketball team announced the commitment of Hunter Chesley, the younger sister of graduating senior Keith Chesley
