PRESQUE ISLE, ME—It came down to the last three seconds of the game after a tough fought battle back and forth between the UMPI Owls and the UMA Moose. The Moose traveled the three and a half hours north to University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday.
The Moose had to shake off a slow start with UMPI getting out to a 9-2 run early in the first. But they did just that. The Moose used their speed and their inside out game to make a run to come back within three before the halftime buzzer. Junior Brandon Rogers (Turlock, CA), along with freshman teammates Justin Kervin (Winslow, ME) and Taylor Wilbur (Manchester, ME) all hit outside the arc in the first half allowing the paint to open up for teammates Keith Chesley (Clinton, ME), Garrett Alley (Union, ME), and Caleb McGuire (Whitefield, ME).
The Moose came out in second half ready to play but it was UMPI’s sharp shooting from the perimeter that didn’t allow UMA to seal the deal. A few controversial calls late in the game put UMPI at the free throw line up by one. With a make on both, UMPI lead by three points with 3 seconds to go. Unfortunately, a tie up jump ball lead to the game buzzer going off and UMPI coming away with a 66-63 win over the Moose.
Co-captains Keith Chelsey and Brandon Rogers set the pace for the Moose. Chesley with 23 points and nine rebounds, and Rogers with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
The Moose are back in action against Northern Maine Community College on Tuesday night at Eastern Maine Community College at 7:00p.m.
