Women’s basketball season ends with loss to Penn State Beaver

UNIONTOWN, Pa. - The University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball season came to an end late Thursday night as the fourth-seeded Moose fell to the number five seed Penn State Beaver 82-71 in the quarterfinal round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II basketball championships.

UMA (23-9) ran into one of the hottest teams in all of Division II as the Lady Lions (19-9) won their 13th game in a row and advance to play the YSCC Champions College of Saint Joseph's Friday evening. The Moose will play a consolation game on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Penn State Fayette.

The two teams came out of the first quarter tied at 17 points, led by 10 points from junior Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) who tied with teammate Caitlin LaFountain (Topsham, Maine) for the team lead in points with 19. LaFountain led the Moose in rebounds with 12 on the night.

Penn State out-scored UMA 19-12 in the second quarter to take a six-point lead into the locker room and led by as many as 20 points with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter. But the Moose battled back in the fourth, led by 13 points from LaFountain who was 6-7 from the floor with four rebounds and three steals in the final period.

Along with Plummer and LaFountain, Carmen Bragg (Washburn, Maine) and Darby Toth (North Port, Fla.) were also in double-digits, as Bragg scored 14 points, including four triples and dished out four assists while Toth scored 11 points with five assists and a pair of steals. 

Penn State had the hot hand from the floor, shooting 48.3% from the field on the game to 36.4% for the Moose. UMA also struggled from the three-point line, hitting just 27% from behind the arc. Penn State did most of their damage in the paint, scoring 36 points from close range to 20 for the Moose.
