LaFountain and Clark lead women's basketball past CMCC

AUBURN, Maine - Freshman Lindsey Clark made the most important free throw of her young career Wednesday night, draining the second of two attempts with 1.3 seconds remaining to lift the University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball team to a dramatic 48-47 victory over Central Maine Community College in Yankee Small College Conference action.

UMA (13-6, 7-0 YSCC) trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but freshman Caitlin LaFountain (Topsham, Maine) was a force to be reckoned with, scoring all eight of her fourth quarter points over the final four and a half minutes of regulation, including three straight jump shots in a row, to bring the Moose to within four points with 1:38 remaining. Senior Darby Toth (North Port, Fla.) and junior Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) combined for three free throws to bring the Moose within two points at 47-45 with 1:22 to play.

"We had our defining moment and it took our entire team to step up and push through and fight with every ounce they had," Head Coach Jennifer Laney. "And that's what set us apart tonight."

LaFountain, who finished the game with a game-high 16 points, tied the game with a layup with 49 seconds, before netting a steal on the other end to give her team a chance to win the game. Clark (Cornish, N.H.) drove the hoop and drew the foul to set up the dramatic finish. Plummer turned in a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Toth scored 13 points.

The game, which is the final regular season meeting of the two teams, included 13 lead changes and three ties. Both teams struggled from the field with CMCC carrying the slight edge at 30.9% from the field while UMA shot 29.1%.

CMCC was led by Abby Tilton, who scored 16 points. UMA returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the team travels to Unity College to take on Hampshire College in YSCC action.
