Women’s basketball falls in close contest with Dean College

CONCORD, N.H. - The University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball team dropped a close one Saturday night, falling to Dean College 58-49 in the second round of the Hogan Camps Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by NHTI.

The Bulldogs jumped out to the early lead in this one, but sophomore Morgan Card (Ellsworth, Maine) scored five points in the first quarter and Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) added another four points to stake UMA to an early 12-8 advantage. Dean closed the quarter with six unanswered points however, to give the Bulldogs a 14-12 lead after one quarter.

The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the second quarter, and a jump shot from Carmen Bragg (Washburn, Maine) tied the game at 26 with a little over a minute to play, but Fataya Larry from Dean hit a layup with 48 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a two point lead heading into the half.

UMA tied the game on a Caitlyn Lafountain (Topsham, Maine) layup early in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs went on a 8-2 run to end the quarter and give them a lead they would never relinquish. The Moose had three players in double-digits, led by double-doubles from Plummer, with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Lafountain with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Darby Toth (North Port, Fla.) scored 10 points while dishing out five assists, and grabbing six rebounds.

Dean was led by Denisha Gardener who scored a game-high 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Vianah Smith, who scored 15 points.

UMA returns to home action on Tuesday night when the team hosts SMCC at the Augusta Civic Center in YSCC action.
