Fast start leads Lady Moose past DIII Alfred State

ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball team scored 21 first quarter points to help lead them to a 61-53 win over NCAA Division III Alfred State Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Panther Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. 

The Lady Moose (4-1, 1-0 YSCC) move on to play the host team Albany today at 2:00 p.m. 

UMA was led by sophomore Carmen Bragg (Washburn, Maine), who scored ten of her 13 points in the first quarter, with perfect shooting. The guard was 2-2 from the field and didn't miss from the charity stripe, going 6-6. Junior Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter as well. The Lady Moose shot 63% from the field in the opening quarter, to just 15% for Alfred State.

The Pioneers rallied to out-score UMA in the remaining three quarters, but the Moose were able to hold off them off to secure the season's first win over an NCAA DIII opponent. Freshman Caitlin LaFountain (Topsham, Maine) turned in yet another double-double performance with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Morgan Card (Ellsworth, Maine) also grabbed 11 boards to go along with six points. Senior Darby Toth (North Port, Fla.) dished out six assists and scored six points as well. 

UMA returns to the Augusta Civic Center on Monday night, playing host to YSCC opponent Great Bay Community College at 6:00 p.m.
