Plummer leads women's basketball past CMCC

AUGUSTA, Maine  - Five players scored in double-digits Thursday night as the University of Maine at Augusta women's basketball team defeated the Central Maine Community College Mustangs 69-63 in the home opener at the Augusta Civic Center.

The Lady Moose (3-1, 1-0 YSCC) were once again led by junior Jamie Plummer, who scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds on 9-13 shooting from the field. Senior Darby Toth (Northport, Fla.) scored 16 points, including four three-pointers. Freshman Caitlin LaFountain (Topsham, Maine) netted 12 points while sophomore Carmen Bragg scored 10 and dished out a game-high seven assists and three steals.

UMA jumped out to the early lead in this one, outscoring CMCC (5-2, 1-1 YSCC) 20-8 in the opening quarter, thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers from Toth. The Mustangs battled back quickly though, out-scoring the Lady Moose in the second and third quarters and trailed by only a point, rallying from a 16 point deficit to cut the UMA lead to one point starting the fourth.

The Mustangs took their first and only lead of the game early in the fourth quarter on a jump shot from Allie Alblondi, but Toth responded with a clutch three-pointer on a nice dish from Bragg to immediately hand the lead back to the Moose. CMCC tied the game once more on a lay-up from Frankie Lally, but once again UMA responded, this time with a layup from LaFountain, giving her team a lead they would never relinquish. Head coach Jennifer Laney's team was 7-9 from the free-throw line in the last 1:08 of play to secure the win.

CMCC was led by Jenny Schlim, who scored 19 points on the night, while Ablondi scored 11.

UMA returns to action this weekend when the team travels to Albany, N.Y. to take part in the Panther Tip-Off Classic, facing Alfred State College at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
