Women's basketball falls to Bates in Consolation

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - University of Maine at Augusta sophomore Arreonte Lee (San Antonio, Tex.) scored 23 points and dished out 12 assists Saturday night on her way to receiving the All-Tournament nod, as UMA fell to Bates 104-83 in the consolation game of the 2013 Ed Hockenbury Classic at Norwich University.

In the first half, Bates powered to 56-38 halftime lead on the strength of 51.2 percent field goal shooting. The Moose took the early lead on a pair of three-pointers by Lee (San Antonio, Texas) and Jennifer Lola (Monmouth, Maine), but Bates would power back and tie the score at 8-8 with 16:07 to play. The Bobcats would quickly sprint to a nine-point lead, but the Moose made one final attack and came within a basket of tying the score at the 8:27 mark.

Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) hit a three-pointer on Bates' next trip down the floor and Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) hit a jumper almost a minute later to open the Bobcats' lead back to seven points. The gap opened even further from there, as the Bobcats led by as many as 20 points with 23 seconds left in the half.

The second half continued in similar fashion, as Bates connected on 51.1 percent of field goals, led by Kelly's 8-13 second-half shooting. With her final basket of the half at 8:32, Kelly set a new Bates program record for points in a game with 42. The basket gave the Bobcats a 90-64 lead.

UMA connected on 49.2 percent of field goals over the 40 minutes of action, including a 50 percent performance (15-30) in the second half.

The Moose were led offensively by Lee, who recorded a double-double of 23 points and 12 assists. Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) added a team-best 26 points, while Lola chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Game note:  Jennifer Lola enters Tuesday night's YSCC match-up against U Maine Machias needing only nine points to reach the 1,000 point plateau. The women's game begins at 5:30 at the Augusta Civic Center, with the men's game to follow at 7:30.
