McGuire’s 30 points lead men’s basketball team to win

CONCORD, N.H. - Junior Caleb McGuire scored a career-high 30 points Sunday afternoon to lead the University of Maine at Augusta men's basketball team to a 90-71 win over Springfield Technical Community College in the second round of the NHTI-Holiday Inn New Year's Men's Basketball Classic. 

The win improves UMA to 7-9 on the season while Springfield Tech fell to 6-10. 

McGuire (Whitefield, Maine) was effective from both the inside and outside, going 10-17 from the field, including a perfect three-for-three from behind the arc, and came up one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards on the day. Senior Keith Chesley was also hot from the three-point line, shooting 5-9 in scoring 28 points. As a team, the Moose shot 54.5% in triples and were 50% from the field. 

Junior Brandon Rogers (Turlock, Calif.) was also in double-digits with 19 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for UMA, who out-rebounded the Rams 38-26 in a game where the Moose led by as many as 19 points. Rogers also dished out six assists and notched two blocks. The Moose trailed for most of the first half, but, rallied for a 19-6 run over the final four minutes of the half, highlighted by 14 points from both Rogers and McGuire to take a 41-37 lead into the locker room. 

The teams traded the lead several times early in the second half, but Chesley hit a pair of three pointers to help put the Moose up for good. UMA returns to action on January 16th when the team takes on Vaughn College at NHTI in New Hampshire.
