Dr. Douglas Merrill was named the Head Golf Coach for the Moose on July 6th, 2022. Doc practiced for 37 years in Wells, Maine, specializing in sports injuries, treating and managing professional, college and high school athletes for over four decades.

 

A graduate of Keene High School, Keene State College, and National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, Illinois.

 

A former three sport athlete and winner of the Reggie Marston football sportsmanship award for the State of New Hampshire.

 

Doc's first year as a UMA coach, included a trip to the USCAA National Championship at Penn State. His first year also included a third place finish in the Yankee Small College Conference championship in New Hampshire. 

 

Coaching philosophy includes a humanistic approach working with each athlete with focus on positive outcomes. 

 

As a student of the game of golf for over 50 years, Doc takes pride polishing and fine tuning the natural ability of his players. Teaching the idea that sometimes less is more and more is less when learning the technical aspects of golf.

 

Athletes often learn faster with small subtle changes in mechanics than overloading with too much information. Doc believes that athletes can learn on a visual basis and sometimes cognitive ways with some possessing both abilities.

 

Doc has PGA certification for doctors treating golf injuries, and pre-season conditioning. Doc has utilized the single plane swing for seniors and athletes with physical limitations. 

 

Doc is a member of the USGA, MSGA, and the Turner Highlands Golf Club with a 6 handicap. 

 

Doc is married and has two daughters, a son and four grandchildren. Hobbies include fishing and playing drums in a classic rock band.
