UMA Opens USCAA Championship Day 1 With Strong Play

STATE COLLEGE, PA – The first day of the 2018 USCAA Golf National Championships is in the books. The Penn State University Blue Course played host to 125 participants vying for team and individual honors in the association’s signature golf tournament.

Two UMA golfers qualified to compete individually at the USCAA Golf Championship and both have started the tournament by playing their best golf so far this season. Ty Cowan shot a 77 on Monday making this the lowest round any UMA golfer has shot in individual play during the Championship. John “Zach” Alden was not far behind shooting a 79 in the day dipping below 80 for the first time this season in competition.

Fellow YSCC golfer Ryan Rothdiener is tied with Ty Cowan who also shot 77 to open the tournament making them 5+ over par and +9 off the lead. NHTI’s Trevor Moore and Chris Nelson sit behind Alden in the standings as they both shot 80.  The individual leader at the midway point is Sean Barron from SUNY ESF, who shot a 4-under, 68 during Monday’s round. Penn State Mont Alto’s Austin Green and a pair of St. Mary of the Woods golfers, Colton Kuppler and Ben Myers, are tied for second after shooting 70.

Cowan and Alden return to tournament play today and look to build on top of their stellar opening day play.
