AUGUSTA, Maine – The 51st University of Maine at Augusta commencement was held on Saturday, May 11th, celebrating 350 students receiving their respective degrees. In the graduating class, there were 5 student-athletes that received their degrees at the Civic Center before their friends, family, and faculty.

The student-athletes that graduated dedicated themselves both to the classroom as well as their respective sports.  Their involvement also extended to enriching the UMA community through multiple avenues of service.

Caitlin LaFountain graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.  During her time here at UMA, she was a dual sport student-athlete, excelling in both cross country and basketball.  LaFountain was a 1,000 point scorer and named to both the USCAA Academic All-American team as well as the USCAA All-American team.  She earned numerous USCAA and YSCC Player of the Week awards. When reflecting on her experiences, LaFountain noted, “my experience with UMA athletics was an extremely important part of my life.  I’m thankful for all the people that I met, the challenges I faced, and all the success our programs had. I’ll always hold UMA Athletics very close to my heart as it helped to make me who I am today.”  Caitlin is currently working at the law firm Brasham & Scott, LLC.

Jake Cummings also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Cummings was also a two sport student-athlete in both cross country and basketball.  Cummings was an extremely dedicated and committed student-athlete for the Moose. He was very involved in campus life, including many events with Team Impact. It was the family atmosphere that Jake will always remember about UMA.  Jake noted: “the people I met and memories I made are things I will always treasure. When you spend so much time with people, they aren't just people you know or hang out with, they become family. That’s the best part about athletics at UMA.  Those that are involved create a family atmosphere and are often the first ones to offer help for those in need.” Jake is currently working at Kennebec Savings Bank.

Pierre Laot completed his last year as a Moose by participating in both cross country and track and field.  Laot earned his degree in Cyber Security. Laot contributed to the track and field team with his involvement in the distance events as well as the relay.  He was eager to try out a variety of events, even throwing the javelin. Laot earned USCAA Academic All-American for his outstanding academic performance. When asked about his experience being a part of UMA Athletics Pierre noted: “Being a member of the cross country and track team for the first time was a challenge but I was helped by a great coach and by amazing teammates who shared their knowledge and experience. I am thankful for having been part of the Moose family.” Pierre is planning on going on to earn his Master’s Degree and eventually his Phd and focus on a career in research.

Caleb Fortin earned his Associates degree in Justice Studies with aspirations to become a police officer.  Fortin ran cross country for two seasons while here at UMA. Currently, he works for the Hallowell Police Department.

Jacob Jones completed his fourth and final year at UMA, earning a bachelor’s degree in Justice Studies.  The 2018-19 season was his first as a student-athlete, taking part in the inaugural season of track and field here at UMA.  Reflecting on the experience, Jacob noted, “being part of the track team at UMA made my senior year my best one while at UMA by far.” After graduation, Jones accepted a position with the Border Patrol.

Please help us congratulate these incredible student-athletes as well as all of the students who have earned their degrees this year!
