UMA Athletics Year in Review: 2018-2019

AUGUSTA, ME – UMA Athletics has had another successful year in terms of academics, athletics competitiveness, as well as making an impact in the local community. Student-athletes have earned prestigious academic and athletic honors on the national level in the USCAA and in the YSCC conference.

GOLF

UMA golf saw several firsts this season with both Zach Alden and Ty Cowan recording the lowest rounds by UMA golfers at the USCAA National Golf Championship. Cowan finished with a two-day score of 155, good enough to tie for 38th place overall nationally. Alden finished the tournament with a score of 159, which brings him to 48th. Ty Cowan’s two rounds of 77 and 78 at the USCAA Championship mark the best rounds of golf by any UMA golfer at the National Championship.  Coach Keith Ross was named YSCC Coach of the Year for his veteran leadership both with the team as well as at the YSCC conference championship.

CROSS COUNTRY

Men’s and women’s cross country had another successful season of running. The combined teams won the Unity College dual meet and also hosted the UMA Cross Country Invitational for the first time here in Augusta on the trails around campus; hosting Unity, Colby, Thomas College, and CMCC. Each team had one USCAA Academic All-American and Shauna Riordan finished 5th overall at the conference championship earning her a spot on the YSCC All-Conference Team.

BASKETBALL

The men’s and women’s basketball teams were again involved with the Augusta community and earned the YSCC Community Service Award for their work with Team Impact. The men’s basketball team had several season highlights including Noah Thompson becoming the 16th Moose on the men’s side to become a 1,000 point scorer. Thompson was also named the USCAA National Student-Athlete of the Year. Other highlights include Dustin Simpson-Bragg being named to the YSCC All-Conference team and also garnered a USCAA All American Honorable Mention.  Both Sidney Moore and Caitlin LaFountain from the women’s basketball team received USCAA All-American Honorable Mentions and were named to the YSCC All-Conference team. LaFountain was also a USCAA Academic All-American for the 4th year in a row. The women earned home court advantage for the first round of the YSCC playoffs against NHTI here in the Augusta Civic Center.

TRACK AND FIELD

UMA had their inaugural track and field season this spring that yielded a significant amount of success with the men’s team finishing 2nd in the YSCC and 5th nationally at the USCAA National Invitational Championship. The women won both the YSCC Invitational Championship and the USCAA National Invitational Championship making this the first USCAA National Invitational Championship for the Moose in UMA history.

BOWLING

Bowlers from both the Augusta and Bangor campuses traveled to Portsmouth, NH to take part in the YSCC Bowling Invitational Championship.  We were represented both in qualifying team and individual play.

HALL OF FAME

The UMA Athletic department as a whole also celebrated many wonderful milestones including the induction of our second UMA Athletics Hall of Fame class.  We honored Katie Poirier (women’s basketball & women’s soccer), Tristan Starbird (men’s basketball, golf coach, basketball assistant coach); Jon Schlenker (soccer coach; faculty; basketball announcer); and Chris Blodgett (men’s basketball).  The UMA Athletic department has also completed a three year strategic plan for continued growth and success of our student-athletes, staff, and programs.

It has truly been a special year for UMA Athletics and we are extremely appreciative of our entire Moose family, near and far.  GO MOOSE!
