AUGUSTA, ME – UMA men’s basketball is excited to announce that Fred Alexander Martinez has committed to the Moose for the 2019-2020 basketball season.

Martinez played for the top ranked Colegio San Felipe Basketball Team in Puerto Rico as a point guard. Colegio San Felipe in Arecibo is one of the top private schools in Puerto Rico that is known for its rigorous academics as well as their athletics. While there, Martinez excelled in the classroom academically and is looking to continue that level of success while at UMA.

When asked about what he was hoping to bring to the Moose men’s basketball team,  Martinez said, “I feel that I will bring a great deal of heart and passion. I’m a fierce competitor, unselfish pass first point guard, with excellent ball handling and a good jump shot. I can promise something I will be giving my all on and off the court for the team. I have been training since the day of my high school graduation and will be working out all summer just to be ready when I get to UMA.”

Martinez added about the recruiting process that, “My experience has been awesome, I met coach Ford, Ms. Laney and Mr. Gilpatrick the day of my campus visit and all I can say I felt so welcome when I was there.  I know they are and will be great people for me to be around and share my time with when I’m at UMA. I met a couple of the guys from the basketball team and I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the guys. Coach Ford keeps in touch with me, asking how I am, that has meant a lot to me, especially coming from the Coach.”

When asked about Fred Martinez, Coach Jim Ford had this to add: “Fred brings backcourt intensity, smart court vision, and a strong work ethic to the Moose.  We are excited to have him join our family.”
